HIGHLIGHTS

  • The framework & toolkit deliverable is actively being used by the Atlantic Canadian provinces to improve citizens’ access to their health care systems & resources

CHALLENGE

Accessing personal health information and health services through the current state of our fragmented health systems can be a cumbersome experience for most Canadians. Canada Health Infoway sought to improve these processes for our Atlantic Canadian citizens through empowering each of the provinces with a framework to guide them in building their own digital access channels.

My role.

As Lead Designer:

  • designed and co-facilitated a workshop of 20 government and patient representatives from Atlantic Canada

  • conducted qualitative analysis and insights reporting

  • designed and developed a framework and toolkit for provinces to co-design and develop their own health technology procurement strategies

PROCESS

Secondary research was conducted to inform the design and facilitation of a full-day workshop in Halifax that brought together 15 government and health sector representatives from each of the Atlantic provinces to uncover core gaps in our health systems that can be filled through the use of technology. This included co-designing concepts to address population needs specific to the Atlantic provinces.

Workshop Facilitation

Client document immersion as well as additional literature research was conducted to inform the design of our workshop plan, materials and activities. The activities included identifying challenges that might be experienced by each group’s assigned persona, prioritizing those challenges on an effort/impact matrix, and crafting an opportunity statement to anchor each group’s collective concept development.

After the workshop, our team analyzed the resulting data through qualitative analysis to ultimately inform the development of a framework and strategic report. This final deliverable package was designed to cater to provincial health representatives as a tool to guide them in prioritizing and developing their own ‘health access channels’ to improve the health system experiences of their citizens.

OUTCOME

This process informed the development
of a framework and toolkit that was distributed to health sector officials across the Atlantic provinces. This framework highlights key design principles that can guide them through their own processes of identifying and building appropriate digital tools to better support their populations. The toolkit also includes assets and guides for them to run their own design workshops with patients and other provincial stakeholders.

An Enabler framework was developed, comprising of 5 high-level enabler themes with 3 guiding design principles per theme.
